Doctrine and Covenants 4

How can you serve God with all your heart, might, mind, and strength?

"Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to his father, Joseph Smith Sr., at Harmony, Pennsylvania, February 1829.

1–4, Valiant service saves the Lord’s ministers; 5–6, Godly attributes qualify them for the ministry; 7, The things of God must be sought after.

Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.

Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.

Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work;

For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;

And faithhopecharity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualify him for the work.

Remember faith, virtue, knowledge, temperancepatiencebrotherly kindnessgodliness, charity, humilitydiligence.

Ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Amen." (Doctrine and Covenants 4)

And here's the commentary entitled: "I can serve God with all my heart, might, mind, and strength."

"Section 4 is often applied to full-time missionaries. However, it’s interesting to note that this revelation was given to Joseph Smith Sr., who wasn’t being called on a mission but still had “desires to serve God” (verse 3).

One way to read this section is to imagine it as a job description for someone who wants to help with the Lord’s work. What is the Lord looking for? What benefits does He offer?

What do you learn about serving the Lord from this revelation?

President Russell M. Nelson called the gathering of Israel “the greatest challenge, the greatest cause, and the greatest work on earth” (“Hope of Israel” [worldwide youth devotional, June 3, 2018], Gospel Library). What do you find in his address that inspires you to participate in this work?

Everyone who has a desire to serve God is called to the work.

The Lord is looking for those who have desires to serve God and have faith, hope, charity and love, with an eye single to the glory of God (laser focus) to help with doing His work. The Lord is offering them salvation. And if they ask, they will receive. And if they knock, it will be opened unto them.

The Lord does want me to serve Him with all my heart, might, mind and strength as I help Him in doing His work. And He blesses me abundantly as I do so.
