1 Kings 19: 11-12; Galatians 5: 22-23; Alma 32: 27-28, 35; Helaman 10: 2-4; Doctrine and Covenants 9: 7-9; 11: 11-14

How do you recognize a revelation from the Lord?

"11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice." (1 Kings 19: 11-12)

"22 But the fruit of the Spirit is lovejoypeacelongsufferinggentleness, goodness, faith,

23 Meeknesstemperance: against such there is no law." (Galatians 5: 22-23)

"27 But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

35 O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?" (Alma 32: 27-28, 35)

"And it came to pass that Nephi went his way towards his own house, pondering upon the things which the Lord had shown unto him.

And it came to pass as he was thus pondering—being much cast down because of the wickedness of the people of the Nephites, their secret works of darkness, and their murderings, and their plunderings, and all manner of iniquities—and it came to pass as he was thus pondering in his heart, behold, a voice came unto him saying:

Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments." (Helaman 10: 2-4)

"11 But he that believeth these things which I have spoken, him will I visit with the manifestations of my Spirit, and he shall know and bear record. For because of my Spirit he shall know that these things are true; for it persuadeth men to do good.

12 And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me—that I am; and he that will not believe me will not believe the Father who sent me. For behold, I am the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world." (Ether 4: 11-12)

"Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.

But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.

But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me." (Doctrine and Covenants 9: 7-9)

"11 For, behold, it is I that speak; behold, I am the light which shineth in darkness, and by my power I give these words unto thee.

12 And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit.

13 Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy;

14 And then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive." (Doctrine and Covenants 11: 11-14)

And here's the ending part of the commentary entitled: "I can learn to hear and understand God’s voice." :

"It might also help to explore other scriptures that describe God’s voice or the influence of His Spirit. Here are a few. Perhaps, after reading these, you could write some guidelines for recognizing revelation: 1 Kings 19:11–12Galatians 5:22–23Alma 32:27–28, 35Helaman 10:2–4Ether 4:11–12Doctrine and Covenants 9:7–911:11–14.

You could also benefit from hearing from today’s prophets, apostles, and other Church leaders who have experience hearing and following God’s voice. Several of them share their experiences in the “Hear Him!” video collection in the Gospel Library. Consider watching one or more.

How will you apply what you learned to hear and recognize the voice of God more clearly?

Some Guidelines for Recognizing Revelation:

1. The Lord reveals His will through a still small voice.

2. When there is lovejoypeacelongsufferinggentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance, the Spirit of the Lord is present, confirming the Lord's revelation.

3. When you're seeking a revelation from the Lord about something, study it in your mind and ask God if it is right. If it is right, your bosom shall burn within you and you shall feel that it is right. If it is not right, you will have no such feeling, you will forget what you have asked instead.

4. The Spirit of the Lord persuadeth men or leadeth them to do good—yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously.

5. Whatsoever is light is good.

6. The Spirit of the Lord enlightens our minds.

7. The Spirit of the Lord fills our soul with joy.
