Abraham 1:1–19; Genesis 15:1–6; Hebrews 11:8–13

How does the Savior help you “embrace” His promises, even if they are “afar off”?

"In the land of the Chaldeans, at the residence of my fathers, I, Abraham, saw that it was needful for me to obtain another place of residence;

And, finding there was greater happiness and peace and rest for me, I sought for the blessings of the fathers, and the right whereunto I should be ordained to administer the same; having been myself a follower of righteousness, desiring also to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace, and desiring to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God, I became a rightful heir, a High Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.

It was conferred upon me from the fathers; it came down from the fathers, from the beginning of time, yea, even from the beginning, or before the foundation of the earth, down to the present time, even the right of the firstborn, or the first man, who is Adam, or first father, through the fathers unto me.

I sought for mine appointment unto the Priesthood according to the appointment of God unto the fathers concerning the seed.

My fathers, having turned from their righteousness, and from the holy commandments which the Lord their God had given unto them, unto the worshiping of the gods of the heathen, utterly refused to hearken to my voice;

For their hearts were set to do evil, and were wholly turned to the god of Elkenah, and the god of Libnah, and the god of Mahmackrah, and the god of Korash, and the god of Pharaoh, king of Egypt;

Therefore they turned their hearts to the sacrifice of the heathen in offering up their children unto these dumb idols, and hearkened not unto my voice, but endeavored to take away my life by the hand of the priest of Elkenah. The priest of Elkenah was also the priest of Pharaoh.

Now, at this time it was the custom of the priest of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to offer up upon the altar which was built in the land of Chaldea, for the offering unto these strange gods, men, women, and children.

And it came to pass that the priest made an offering unto the god of Pharaoh, and also unto the god of Shagreel, even after the manner of the Egyptians. Now the god of Shagreel was the sun.

10 Even the thank-offering of a child did the priest of Pharaoh offer upon the altar which stood by the hill called Potiphar’s Hill, at the head of the plain of Olishem.

11 Now, this priest had offered upon this altar three virgins at one time, who were the daughters of Onitah, one of the royal descent directly from the loins of Ham. These virgins were offered up because of their virtue; they would not bow down to worship gods of wood or of stone, therefore they were killed upon this altar, and it was done after the manner of the Egyptians.

12 And it came to pass that the priests laid violence upon me, that they might slay me also, as they did those virgins upon this altar; and that you may have a knowledge of this altar, I will refer you to the representation at the commencement of this record.

13 It was made after the form of a bedstead, such as was had among the Chaldeans, and it stood before the gods of Elkenah, Libnah, Mahmackrah, Korash, and also a god like unto that of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

14 That you may have an understanding of these gods, I have given you the fashion of them in the figures at the beginning, which manner of figures is called by the Chaldeans Rahleenos, which signifies hieroglyphics.

15 And as they lifted up their hands upon me, that they might offer me up and take away my life, behold, I lifted up my voice unto the Lord my God, and the Lord hearkened and heard, and he filled me with the vision of the Almighty, and the angel of his presence stood by me, and immediately unloosed my bands;

16 And his voice was unto me: Abraham, Abraham, behold, my name is Jehovah, and I have heard thee, and have come down to deliver thee, and to take thee away from thy father’s house, and from all thy kinsfolk, into a strange land which thou knowest not of;

17 And this because they have turned their hearts away from me, to worship the god of Elkenah, and the god of Libnah, and the god of Mahmackrah, and the god of Korash, and the god of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; therefore I have come down to visit them, and to destroy him who hath lifted up his hand against thee, Abraham, my son, to take away thy life.

18 Behold, I will lead thee by my hand, and I will take thee, to put upon thee my name, even the Priesthood of thy father, and my power shall be over thee.

19 As it was with Noah so shall it be with thee; but through thy ministry my name shall be known in the e arth forever, for I am thy God." (Abraham 1:1–19)

"After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shieldand thy exceeding great reward.

And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness." (Genesis 15:1–6)

"8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritanceobeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." (Hebrews 11:8–13)

And here's the commentary entitled: "God will bless me for my faith and righteous desires." :

“We are all influenced by our families [and] our culture,” Elder Neil L. Andersen taught, “and yet I believe there is a place inside of us that we uniquely and individually control and create. … Eventually, our inner desires are given life and they are seen in our choices and in our actions” (“Educate Your Desires, Elder Andersen Counsels,” ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Consider how Abraham 1:1–19 demonstrates what Elder Andersen taught. Questions like these might help:

  • What did Abraham desire? How were his desires evident in his actions? How did God support his desires?

  • What are your desires? How are they evident in your actions? How does God support you?

  • What message do these verses have for people whose family members do not desire righteousness?

One of Abraham and Sarah’s greatest desires—to have a child—went unfulfilled for many years (see Genesis 15:1–6). What do you learn from Hebrews 11:8–13 about how Abraham and Sarah faced this trial? How does the Savior help you “embrace” His promises, even if they are “afar off”?

See also “Deliverance of Abraham” (video), Gospel Library."

  • What did Abraham desire? How were his desires evident in his actions? How did God support his desires?

  • Abraham's desire was to be one who possessed great knowledge, and to be a greater follower of righteousness, and to possess a greater knowledge, and to be a father of many nations, a prince of peace, and to receive instructions, and to keep the commandments of God. His desires were indeed evident in his actions. He sought his appointment unto the Priesthood according to the appointment of God unto the fathers concerning the seed, even though his own immediate fathers had departed from their righteousness. God supported him by protecting him and granting the righteous desires of his heart.

  • What are your desires? How are they evident in your actions? How does God support you?

  • I know that God knows exactly the desires of my heart because I've been seeing His protection and support. He's also been granting the righteous desires of my heart. I realized that the Lord has been watching over me and guiding and leading me gently back to my righteous desires during the times when my actions don't align with what I truly desire. There's the tendency for me, as we all have, to do things randomly, and to spend time on things that don't really help me to get closer to realizing the righteous desires of my heart. And I'm grateful that the Lord is constantly reminding me through His Spirit of things that matter most. I know He wants me to progress towards turning the desires of my heart into reality. And as I keep striving to do what I can, my reality will eventually catch up with my desires or my vision.

  • What message do these verses have for people whose family members do not desire righteousness?

For my family members who do not desire righteousness at the moment as evident in their actions, I think the message of the verses here for them is that they have the opportunity right now while they are still around, to turn to God, and make the choice to align their desires with His will. God's arms are open for them and He is patiently awaiting their return.

What do you learn from Hebrews 11:8–13 about how Abraham and Sarah faced this trial? How does the Savior help you “embrace” His promises, even if they are “afar off”?

Abraham and Sarah exercised their faith in the Lord, and their faith strengthened them. They trusted in Him as they faced their trial. God comforted them and made promises to them. They "embraced" His promises even if they were "afar off". As I continue to exercise my faith in the Savior, He is helping me "embrace" His promises, even if they are "afar off". I am embracing His promises of resurrection and living together with my family forever even though these promises are "afar off". Just as my Savior Jesus Christ was resurrected, my own earthly father and other deceased family members will be resurrected, and I will see them again and be with them for eternity. The Lord has been comforting and strengthening me because of my faith in Him. That's why I am still able to continue to embrace His promises, even though they are "afar off." I know He lives. He is my Savior and King. And I know His promises are true.
