Doctrine and Covenants 18: 1-5; 6: 22-24

 

How do you build up your faith in Christ?

"1 Now, behold, because of the thing which you, my servant Oliver Cowdery, have desired to know of me, I give unto you these words:

2 Behold, I have manifested unto you, by my Spirit in many instances, that the things which you have written are true; wherefore you know that they are true.

3 And if you know that they are true, behold, I give unto you a commandment, that you rely upon the things which are written;

4 For in them are all things written concerning the foundation of my church, my gospel, and my rock.

5 Wherefore, if you shall build up my church, upon the foundation of my gospel and my rock, the gates of hell shall not prevail against you." (Doctrine and Covenants 18: 1-5)

"22 Verily, verily, I say unto you, if you desire a further witness, cast your mind upon the night that you cried unto me in your heart, that you might know concerning the truth of these things.

23 Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?

24 And now, behold, you have received a witness; for if I have told you things which no man knoweth have you not received a witness?" (Doctrine and Covenants 6: 22-24)

And here's the commentary entitled: “Build up my church.” : 

"In section 18, the Lord gave Oliver Cowdery instructions to help lay the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ. What do you notice about the counsel He gave—especially in verses 1–5? You might consider how this same counsel applies to you as you “build up” your faith in Christ. For example:

• What have you “desired to know” of the Lord? (verse 1).

• What does it mean to you to “rely upon the things which are written”? (verse 3). How has the Spirit “manifested unto you” that these things are true? (verse 2; see also Doctrine and Covenants 6:22–24).

• How do you build your life on “the foundation of [the Savior’s] gospel and [His] rock”? (verse 5)."

I have "desired to know" of the Lord how exactly I could accomplish things where I needed more understanding and wisdom in my life. 

To "rely upon the things which are written" means to study the word of the Lord which He revealed to His servants and already written. The Spirit has been manifesting to me that what has been written is true as I study and ponder upon them. 

I build my life on "the foundation of the Savior's gospel and His rock" as I consistently rely upon things which are written" and continually "desire to know" of the Lord the things in areas of my life where I need more understanding and wisdom.
