How are you blessed because God has called seers or prophets?
"19 And now, when Ammon had made an end of speaking these words the king rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God, saying: Doubtless a great mystery is contained within these plates, and these interpreters were doubtless prepared for the purpose of unfolding all such mysteries to the children of men." (Mosiah 8: 19)
"13 Now Ammon said unto him: I can assuredly tell thee, O king, of a man that can translate the records; for he has wherewith that he can look, and translate all records that are of ancient date; and it is a gift from God. And the things are called interpreters, and no man can look in them except he be commanded, lest he should look for that he ought not and he should perish. And whosoever is commanded to look in them, the same is called seer.
14 And behold, the king of the people who are in the land of Zarahemla is the man that is commanded to do these things, and who has this high gift from God.
15 And the king said that a seer is greater than a prophet.
16 And Ammon said that a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have, except he should possess the power of God, which no man can; yet a man may have great power given him from God.
17 But a seer can know of things which are past, and also of things which are to come, and by them shall all things be revealed, or, rather, shall secret things be made manifest, and hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known shall be made known by them, and also things shall be made known by them which otherwise could not be known.
18 Thus God has provided a means that man, through faith, might work mighty miracles; therefore he becometh a great benefit to his fellow beings.
19 And now, when Ammon had made an end of speaking these words the king rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God, saying: Doubtless a great mystery is contained within these plates, and these interpreters were doubtless prepared for the purpose of unfolding all such mysteries to the children of men." (Mosiah 8: 13-19)
And here's the first paragraph of the commentary entitled: "The Lord provides prophets, seers, and revelators to benefit mankind." :
"When Limhi heard Ammon’s testimony that the Lord had raised up a seer, Limhi “rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God” (Mosiah 8:19). Why do you think he felt that way? What do you learn about seers from Ammon’s words in Mosiah 8:13–19?" :
King Limhi had been longing to know what was written on those plates that his own people had found. Our longings are blessings. Because of these longings, our hearts become tender and we look to God more, yearning to receive the blessings we're longing for. This is an aha moment for me. There are blessings I've been longing for, for quite a while, even years already. Now I realize that these longings are blessings, even blessings in disguise. And I've been looking to God more as I've been yearning for these blessings I've been longing for. Because King Limhi had been longing for that blessing to know the great mystery contained within those plates, when he learned about a seer, "he rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God." He got so close to getting exactly what he'd been longing for. He must have felt a great relief! I can relate to that a lot.
King Limhi had another longing--for himself and for his people--freedom from bondage. He must have felt so great relief at that moment when he heard Ammon speaking to him and saw that their captivity under the Lamanites was about to end.
From Ammon's words, I learned that a seer is more than a prophet because God has given him a gift to translate ancient records. And a seer is a revelator and a prophet also. A seer can see what happened in the past and what's going to happen in the future through God's power.
Because God has called seers and prophets and instructed them to write His words and what's happening during their time, I've been able to read God's words and His dealings with His children since the beginning of time--even before we, God's children. started coming down here on earth. And oh how comforting it is to see God's love and mercy towards all His children from learning about what happened in the past. And how assuring it is to know that God is aware of the details and the details and the details of our lives, seeing that God is revealing to His living prophet what is going to happen in the future and guiding us to know exactly what to do to rise above the challenges we're facing in our day.
